LOVE

Working without a pattern, we’ll create the center L-O-V-E block, then build the surrounding borders using the flip-and-sew method on paper foundations. This is classic string piecing—not paper piecing—because there are no lines to follow.

Students should bring fabric strings to piece with. Strings can be long or short and may be straight or irregular (narrow at one end and wider at the other). Tonya typically uses strings starting at ¾" wide, but you may work as narrow as you’re comfortable sewing. Strings can be as wide as 2½" (the width of a jelly roll strip). If you’d like to work on a larger scale, that is completely doable—consider strings in the 1½" to 3½" range.

Don’t have strings ready? You can cut them from scraps or pre-cuts. AASC also sells packages of strings in the End of Bolt Treasures basket near the cutting table.

Tonya’s quilt used a large amount of light-value, low-volume fabrics, with roughly as many light fabrics as medium and dark fabrics combined. She gravitated toward pinks, purples, and blues, but this is a true scrap quilt—fabrics do not need to come from a single collection.

AASC will provide sample paper foundations for use during class.
